Syrian asylum seekers forced back or detained

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and independent rights organisations report human rights abuses on Syrian refugees at the border between Turkey and Greece. The refugees are either forced back to Turkey or detained without access to necessary humanitarian and legal aid.

Norway partakes in the common European surveillance of the border control between Turkey and Greece through the border control cooperation Frontex. In addition, Norway is financing the first reception centre for Syrian refugees and other asylum seekers in Fylakio by the boarder river Evros.

Greek and European authorities are jointly responsible for securing the right to seek protection of refugees in Europe. Also Norwegian politicians and authorities are responsible for how refugees are met at Europe’s South Eastern border.
